Falmouth, capital of Trelawny Parish, is a town of 8,000 people on the north coast of Jamaica. During the 1800′s, Falmouth was a wealthy port town importing slaves and exporting sugar. In March 2011, the sleepy town between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios became the newest port of call for the world’s largest cruise ships. Royal Caribbean International and the Jamaican government began construction of the pier in 2009, bringing the hope of more jobs and new opportunities for a region with high unemployment. However, the transformation of Falmouth has also led to the relocation of entire neighborhoods, a decrease in the commercial fish population and an influx of opportunists from all over Jamaica.
The Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, docks for the first time in Falmouth on March 24, 2011.
